Who is more proud of their country? A scientific assessment of the Presidential candidates' pride in America.

In November, we the voters, must go to the polls and choose the man who will lead this country for the next four years. There are many issues upon which we can base that decision, the economy, the war in Iraq, national security, the war on terrorism, the price of gas, health care, education, the loss of personal liberties, abortion, freedom of speech, gun control, freedom of the press and internet, privacy, and protecting our Constitution from those who wish strip it of its powers and protections.

But the media and the top party political strategists are worried about something they consider much more important, and that is the question of which candidate is more proud of their country? I have spent a great deal of time thinking about this question and have determined that the only way to be really sure who is most proud is to look at this question scientifically. I have developed a scientific scoring method that will enable us to know once and for all, who is more proud of their country, Barack and Michelle Obama, or John and Cindy McCain?

Cindy McCain was quoted has saying “I always have been and will always be extremely proud of my country.” This scores a full 10 out of 10 points because she has “always” been proud of her country. However, since she is not the actual candidate running for election we have to deduct 5 points for having no bearing on anything, giving her a total of 5 points.

John McCain on the other hand has been quoted more than once saying “I didn’t love my country until I was deprived of her company.” This is a very negative statement about “her” and not only addresses his pride but also his “love” for “her”, making the statement much more serious, and costs him a deduction of 6 points giving him a subtotal of 4 out of 10 points. Because he is an actual candidate and if elected would make decisions that could have some effect on the future of this country, he gets the automatic 5 point Candidate Bonus, plus the 2 point bonus for wearing an American Flag Lapel pin, giving him a total of 11 points.

Michelle Obama was quoted as saying “…for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country.” While the Republicans have slammed her for saying this, she was later defended by her husband as really meaning that “This is the first time that she’s been proud of the politics of America…” Even the current First Lady, Laura Bush, defended her statement by saying, “I think she probably meant ‘I’m more proud.’ That’s what she really meant.” So while she gets a full 6 point deduction for the negative statement, and a 5 point deduction for not being the candidate, with a subtotal of minus 1, she gets 2 points for being defended by her husband, 3 points for being defended by the a Republican First Lady, and 1 point for being misconstrued, giving her a total of 5 points.

Now Barack Obama has never said that he wasn’t proud of his country, but his former pastor, Reverend Wright did when he gave a sermon in which he described what he felt was the country’s treatment of blacks in America, “The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America…” For being guilty by association, Barack Obama gets a hefty 5 point deduction. But he gets the 5 point Candidate Bonus, plus the 2 point flag lapel pin bonus with a 1 point deduction for refusing to wear one at first, giving him a total of 11 points.

The final results of this highly scientific yardstick of the “Pride Issue” have indicated that we have a tie. John and Cindy McCain end up with a grand total of 16 out of 20, tied with 16 out of 20 for Barack and Michelle Obama. While this may upset the pundits and the media, it should be considered a victory for the American people. With this issue decided, it means that in November, voters can make their choice based on how they feel each candidate will handle the important issues this country faces, and not some hyped, media and partisan nonsense.
