What's really wrong with Rick Warren at Obama's inauguration
By William S. James
There is a great deal of controversy over President-elect Barack Obama’s choice to have evangelist Pastor Rick Warren deliver the invocation at his inauguration on January 20th, and the outcry is brought on by many of the progressive activist groups, primarily the LGBT community, who looked to Barack Obama as an agent of change, and who view the outspoken Rick Warren as an agent of more of the same gay-bashing from the pulpit. I also find the whole subject disturbing, but not for the same reasons. While I find offense in any hint that LGBT’s are somehow “different” or not equal in any sense of the word, what I find most unacceptable about the entire matter is that we need a prayer of any kind either at the beginning or end of the inauguration ceremonies. I find it equally disturbing that we still feel the need to have the president swear on the bible to do his job in protecting and upholding the Constitution of the United States. Until we, as a nation, can accept that we no longer need the archaic practices of praying at inaugurations, and swearing on a bible to take a man or woman at their word that he or she will do the job that they were elected by the people to do, it matters very little who leads the prayer. Perhaps the day will never come when the people of this country could accept an atheist or even a non-Christian to hold the office of president. Of course not so long ago it would have been unheard of to think that the American people could elect an African-American, but it happened. Until that day when we are truly able to separate church and state, we will cling to infusing Christian religion and religious references into a government that is supposed to represent all of the people, including non-Christians, and yes, even Atheists. The LGBT’s should be angry, but not because Rick Warren, someone who expounds intolerance of their lifestyle, is saying a prayer at the inauguration. They should be angry, that Christian America in general regards them as second-rate citizens who do not deserve equal rights under the law. While Barack Obama promised change, and supports equal rights under the constitution for LGBT’s, he does not support same-sex marriage and defines marriage as between a man and woman, the same tactic that is used by many states to block the same-sex marriage initiatives. Unfortunately, for Barack Obama to get elected, and to function effectively as a president in our time, he must perpetuate the myth that we are “One nation, under God” and cater to the likes of Rick Warren, and the many “sheep in wolves’ clothing” of the Religious Right. William S. James, Secular activist of government for all the people
