The Wind is Blowing in a Different Direction

By William S. James

Sometimes when you ride, as you pedal, a hill or the wind hinders every effort you make to go ahead. You can pedal harder and increase your rpms, you can stand on your pedals and sort of run in place on wheels, and you can try to go really fast, but no matter how you fight it, you can’t win. It’s as though all the forces of nature are against you. It's as though your wheels are stuck in mud.

That’s what we face now, an uphill battle with the wind of hard times and mud in our face. We are trying to keep our head and feet moving forward, but the sheer force of the foul wind, challenges our strength and determination.

Barack Obama was chosen to face that wind head-on, but we need to give him a chance. We’ve got to let the man put on his rain gear, and face the storm ready for the rough weather ahead. It’s been three days since we heard the news that he was the next man up on the pedestal, from whom we sought all the answers. Barack Obama was elected in a landslide to lead this country, and already the press is pushing him for his entire agenda to be started and succeeded, now. Can we at least let him be sworn in as President before we expect him to change the world?

The media should seek the truth, but they should not manufacture stories through ultra-inspection, show promos, breaking news headlines, and special reports that rehash the same stories over-and-over in a five to ten minute news cycle. Let the small stories die, and the big stories live, but it ill-serves the country and the President-Elect to turn every small story into a big story just to fill airtime.

Barack Obama can change this country, and maybe, if he is really, really inspirational, maybe he can change the dialogue about freedom around the world. And we’d all be better off for it, if we can just give him the chance to do it in the manner and timetable he feels is necessary.

Sometimes when you ride, the wind is at your back, where you’re going is well within your reach, and it feels like downhill all the way. That’s when you know you must pedal as hard as your legs, head and heart will allow, and you will get there, and it feels good when you arrive. You may be exhausted, and you will have given your all, but that's when you find out, that the effort is as sweet as the victory.
