The war in our own streets we can't win

The citizens of the United States know that something about this country has changed. Many would like nothing more than to be able to engage in this sort of Woodstock style of patriotism that hinges on flag decals, flag pins, car flags, and “God Bless America”, but there’s this kind of bad aftertaste, that just won’t go away. Like the taste of blood spilt in the war that’s taking place in our own streets, with violent crimes and organized crime exploiting hard-working and not-so-hard-working people.

This culture clash, this war in our streets, has already had a high toll in human lives lost and ruined, but along with the financial burdens to fight this ill-conceived war, it is more than this country can afford to spend, with little to show for it. For decades this war has been blamed on illegal drugs, and hundreds of billions of dollars have been spent on trying to win “The War on Drugs”. The war should have been called “the War on Street Violence and Organized Crime” and maybe the focus would have shifted to the real problem. Organized crime simply exploits all of the things government regulates against that people want, and then gain wealth and power from doing business in a market with high demand, and no taxation. Black Market is the best market for organized crime because they usually have a monopoly, and control the entire market with no “outside” interference.

Conservative attitudes towards law and enforcement, too often take a regulatory approach to any problem that upsets them, like abortion, drug use, pornography, prostitution, strip clubs, flag burning, homelessness, addictions, homo-sexuality, celebrity, individualism, heritage, religion, and the list goes on and on. What wastes taxpayers money, is the fact that often these regulations and enforcement mechanisms come with a major financial commitment and high price tag. For any of the above that actually are problems and not opinions, or products of the very laws that are designed to combat them, including trying to pinpoint the real causes of all the violence and aggression, what’s wrong with listening to experts in science, medical, sociological, and psychological analysis of these problems, and come up with a logical “expert motivated” plan instead of the too often politically motivated plan, to get the violence, exploitation, intolerance and hate off the streets once and for all.

But unless this country stops the bi-partisan grandstanding, and first addresses its own inner-decline with wisdom and a sound comprehensive “overall” plan to solve this country’s economic, energy, financial, housing, education, healthcare, and employment problems, there will be no decrease in violent and aggressive crimes, because having a lack of hope and prospects in life causes desperation, and desperation leads to violence. If our government can’t lead, then we will find ourselves mired in two or three costly wars at a time, far into the future, and they’ll be wars which we’ll never be able to get out of, or “win”. That’s why war always leaves a bad taste in my mouth, because war kills.
