The Supreme Court agrees with Archie Bunker
The Supreme Court today struck down Washington D.C.’s ban on handguns saying individuals have the right to own guns, and that it violates the 2nd Amendment to the U. S. Constitution. The 2nd Amendment states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Let me say right now that I agree with the 2nd Amendment in the context and the times in which it was written, but not in its modern day interpretation. Nowadays, the Right-Wingers flaunt it to mean that every home should have a gun rack in the living room so they can protect their families, but from whom? It is clear that based on the language of the 2nd Amendment that the reason the right to bear arms was given to the people was to protect “the security of a free State,” When this was written, the only real perceived threat to a “free” state was the governing body of the people. This was why was the Constitution of United States and the Bill of Rights were written to begin with, to protect the citizenry from any form of government that tried to take away the peoples’ liberties. If somebody tried to truly exercise their 2nd Amendment rights today in that context, or even spoke about it they would end up behind bars as a threat to national security. Abhorring violence of any kind, I am not in any way suggesting that Americans should take up arms and act against the government. We are a society of laws, but in this case, it looks as though the Supreme Court, the very institution given the task of interpreting our laws doesn’t get it. To think that the writers of the Constitution in any way intended for 304 million to be walking around with guns is absurd. The National Institute of Justice in 2007 estimated that there were nearly 200 million guns in the hands of private individuals, and based on the Court’s ruling today, and the ecstasy displayed by the Right-Wing across the nation, I’m not so sure we should celebrate yet. What about the other 104 million pairs of hands that aren’t enjoying the pleasure of holding some cold-hard steel? One can only hope that the next step by the court will be a Constitutional Amendment requiring citizens to own guns. Hell, in order to be true Americans I believe not only should our schools allow prayer, but they should require marksmanship classes starting at the kindergarten level and move on up to full automatic weapons by high school graduation, then we would be well protected. And finally, in the words of Archie Bunker, “all the airlines have to do to end skyjackings is arm the passengers”, wise words from a wise man. I’m sure the court must have been watching All in the Family reruns when they wrote this decision, because they sure weren’t paying attention to the words of the Constitution. William S. James, Unarmed sitting duck
