The Beijing games close with a message of hope
The Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing are now in the record books, and after every Olympic Games, one can’t help but wonder how they pull it off. These Games were politically controversial from the moment Beijing was announced as the host country by the IOC in 2001. They remained politically controversial, until the competition began. Then, as should be the case, the athletes stole the spotlight. In competition, regardless of what colors are worn by the athlete, regardless of which country the athlete represents, the essence of the performance comes from the athlete, and the unbelievable hard work that led up to that performance. While the media searches for patriotic storylines, we the viewers must make our own decisions of whether to cheer on an exceptional performance of a so-called “enemy” of our nation, or to let our nationalistic bias taint the moment. Those moments at these games, may have been particularly trying for some, but it seems as though the majority of the people have let the games speak for themselves, let the athletes write the dialogue, and have accepted the script as written. China’s spectacular seven year ride is over. The Chinese people, as the rest of the world’s people must now return to everyday life, its defeat and sorrow, its triumph and happiness. Every day is an event that presents challenges for the average citizens of the world that equal the magnitude of any sporting competition. Now that the two week truce is over, those same people must once again rely on their leaders and the other leaders of the world’s nations to make decisions that can somehow convey the cooperation and respect that seems to prevail at both the summer and winter games. And for the country that initiates the true beginning of world cooperation and peace, not for profit, but to equally improve the lives of all of the billions of people on this earth, a gold medal.
