Soaring gas prices. The only remedy that will work?
Every time you go to the gas station, the total to fill-up is higher than it was last time, and you know, maybe it’s the only thing that will actually bring about a change. As bad as it hurts me, and my little hatchback, I can’t imagine what it must be like for the millions of Americans who got sucked in by the whole SUV craze, as the American automobile manufacturers followed the wave of the publics’ philosophy of demand, that bigger was once again better. But it seems that everyone forgot the lesson’s learned at the hands of the oil embargo of the 70’s, and the Japanese compact car invasion and the destabilization they caused. I don’t blame this problem solely on the oil companies, OPEC, or anyone else. We are all to blame for this problem to some degree, as long as we continue to operate under the assumption that there will always be plenty of cheap oil and gas, and use it as a resource that can never be exhausted. If we continue, we will have denied the Third World any chance it has to advance into the company of the developed nations. We will have also denied a sound future for generations to come, speculating their prosperity on the hopes that science and industry will come up with a viable alternative before it’s too late. Do we really want our legacy as a generation, to be that of being the Irresponsible Generation? Perhaps worst of all, for years now we have watched our country’s leadership shape our failed foreign policy based on one primary issue, foreign oil. The way I see it we have two choices. Either we take steps as a nation and decrease our dependence and demand on the earth’s fossil fuel reserves, or we accept the consequences of not doing so. Choosing the latter, we risk economic and political decline or ruin, and maybe even the loss of society as we know it. The presumptive Presidential nominee for the Republican’s, John McCain offered a plan that suspended the gas tax for the summer months. This measure is similar to putting a band-aid on a severed artery. But even more than its short-comings as a solution, in the long-term, it actually worsens the problem by increasing demand. Do we really want to trust the man who welcomed the invasion of Kuwait, because it relieved some of the media pressure he was experiencing as one of the “Keating Five” involved in the Savings and Loan crisis of the late 80’s? Barak Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, took the politically daring stand to reject dangling the carrot of a few dollars in front of the voters, and has detailed a plan that focuses on attempting to change the American mindset on fuel consumption by going to the source. He would raise the fuel-efficiency standards to which the auto industry would be held, and force the automotive manufacturers to produce more fuel-efficient cars. Secondly he takes on the oil industry by proposing investment in a national Bio-fuel infrastructure to provide a working, viable alternative option to fossil fuels. Finally, he plans to reduce the risk of investing in renewable fuels by providing loan guarantees and venture capital to those entrepreneurs with the best plans to develop cell-bio fuel. For America to become a leader in a global effort to resolve the global scope of the problem, Americans will have to use every bit of the creativity, ingenuity and productivity that made us famous as a world leader. We will also need to be prepared to sacrifice, and compromise, as well as be willing to accept whatever change is needed. So go ahead enjoy your Hummer or Escalade while you can, but don’t expect me to feel sorry for you when you go to the pumps, because while you fill up your status symbol, you need to be aware, that you are part of the problem. Oh, and while you’re at it, instead of topping off your 32 gallon gas tank, save some gas for the rest of us losers, we need to get there too. |
