Obama satirized by New Yorker
The New Yorker magazine is being denounced by the offices of both John McCain and Barack Obama for their July 21st magazine cover depicting a caricature of Barack and Michelle Obama fist-bumping in the Oval Office dressed as Muslim extremists. Both camps are calling it “tasteless and offensive.” The magazine’s press release about the new issue describes the cover illustration entitled “Politics of Fear” by artist Barry Blitt as meant to satirize "the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama's campaign”. While the timing of its use is suspect, with its loose reference as an accompaniment for an article about Obama, the magazine’s justification for its use is a stretch at best, since the Obama article does not feature a discussion on the right-wing use of fear in this campaign. Instead it is a piece which explores Obama’s political formative years in Chicago. The use of this caricature, with Blitt’s professional artistry of a radically fictitious scenario is seen by many as offensive. However it must be remembered that the decision to use this illustration, was based on one principle, and that is to sell as many magazines as possible, regardless of whether the “stir” caused comes from positive or negative sentiment. If the illustration had been used to feature an article about this subject, and further expose the false perceptions that some of the general public has about Barack Obama, it could have been easily defended. In the absence this correlation, its use could be labeled sensationalist and maybe even irresponsible in the sense that instead of satirizing those false perceptions, it could easily spread them if taken at face value with no surrounding context. Still, freedom of the press prevails despite the level of taste displayed. The fact that we are a country of freedom, even the freedom to satirize to the point of outrage makes this just another minor talking point in a long campaign. No doubt the fact that this has become a “news story” will boost sales dramatically. Though its significance will have little political impact as a campaign influence, it is another testament to the fact that the 24 hour news media, with its microscopic coverage of every statement and nuance, has taken political correctness and made the passing marks almost impossible to attain. This cover which would have reached thousands of eyes, will now reach many millions because of the media’s repetitive “outrage”. The same bad taste for which they condemn the New Yorker, will now be fair game to be displayed endlessly, and discussed tirelessly. Freedom of the press must prevail, and that includes letting the media take a small story and turn it into a huge story. America is about choice, if you disagree with the New Yorker magazine cover, you show them by not buying it. Just as I have the choice to turn off the 24 Hour News Bots, if I’m nauseated with their coverage. Click! William S. James, enjoying the quiet |
