"Obama Love" fest, McCain tantrum
Tuesday, John McCain, the McCain camp, the 24 Hour NewsBot talking heads, and every other Right-wing blabber who could manage to get a mike jammed in front of him or her was slamming Barack Obama, and the so-called Liberal Media for their coverage of Obama’s continuing trip overseas. Predictably, even the anything but “independent” Lou Dobbs, got in on the feeding frenzy and twisted Obama’s words to fill his hour of news reporting as taught by the “I’m always right” school of self-serving news. In other words, it was politics and 24 Hour NewsBot politics as usual. When I switched channels around midnight, after watching 5 hours of an almost inhuman Alps mountain stage in the Tour de France, Larry King’s Bette Midler clone fill-in, Joy Behar, had such political “experts” as actors Fran Drescher and Ben Stein in a totally irrelevant debate on what really matters, the liberal media’s coverage of Barack Obama’s trip, John McCain’s nonexistent campaign strategy and his inability to offer anything beyond his mantra of “Obama’s photo-op” and “the surge, the surge” as well as his ridiculous day-to-day changing definition of “winning” (see previous entry). After 6 hours in bed which parlayed into about 3 hours of fitful sleep, the feeding frenzy continues this morning and seems to have enough steam to nourish and sustain itself for days or weeks to come, because once the media develops a talking point, they are like Pit Bulls with lock jaw. Forget the issues that are important to this country, educating us about them, and spotlighting those who are offering real solutions to those problems. Those get a few seconds, and then back to what really matters, themselves. Instead of something that matters, I wake up to the CNN ticker header, “OBAMA LOVE” FEST. Even as I swallowed more coffee to try to ease myself out of my sleep deficient haze, I had to do a double-take on that one. At first inspection, it seemed clear, but then I saw the quotation marks and had to wonder. If I had written that headline I would have submitted OBAMA “LOVE FEST”, but after I really thought about it, I realized that I probably would have been fired from CNN for just not getting it. But how can everyone be claiming “OBAMA LOVE” when he is being racked over the coals for doing exactly what he’s supposed to be doing at this point, campaigning to be elected President. John McCain had campaigned on the fact that Obama hadn’t had a recent trip to Iraq, and because of that discounted Obama’s position on the Iraq war as uninformed. Forget that McCain had slipped in his own flack-jacketed photo-op with the generals while Obama was still embroiled in the primaries. The McCain trip was planned in a desperate effort to try to generate some headlines of his own. McCain and his Right-Wing coalition forced Obama to take the trip, and now that he’s there, he is somehow involved in some great sin, because of course as they always do, the media circus doesn’t want to miss one fart or burp he makes. Every step Obama takes is covered as “Breaking News!!!!!” Correct me if I’m wrong, but when he made the announcement he was going, THAT would have been “Breaking News”. But now that he’s on a trip that was planned in advance, wouldn’t the actual events of that trip just be “Continuing Coverage”? Of course in the world of 24 Hour NewsBots, coverage is always continuing, so everything gets elevated to “Breaking News”, even hard hitting items like, “Breaking News...It’s 2008!!!” However to be fair, I must give many of the 24 Hour NewsBots and morning news shows credit where credit is due, even the always constipated Lou Dobbs. They have given T. Boone Pickens and his self-funded energy crisis ad campaign, some coverage. What’s even more amazing, is that they are even letting him present his plan, which consists of actual proposed solutions for solving America’s life threatening addiction to foreign oil. Maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and maybe if our current leaders, and our “leaders-to-be”, will listen to a man like Pickens, and seriously consider his plan and any other real plans that might be out there, we might even have enough energy to power that light.
