Neil Rogers, midday radio star in often bleak world
Although he would probably say I’m cursed to live in such a cesspool such as South Florida, radio talk show host Neil Rogers is one of the reasons I’m glad I live here. Rogers midday radio show is broadcast on 560 WQAM a sports AM talk radio station that provides listeners with such a weak signal that their attention is often tried to the limits and often interfered with by bleed-over from a Cuban radio station 90 miles away. But still we listen. Rogers proves his distaste for the South Florida lifestyle and its inhabitants by broadcasting from his apartment broadcast studio in Toronto Canada. So why do we listen? While I can’t speak for the rest of his audience who have consistently kept him in the top percentiles of the male 25-54 demographics, English speaking that is. For myself, while I have had extremely liberal leanings my entire adult life, I don’t believe they were labeled as such in my own mind, until I started listening to Neil about 25 years ago. But more than anything, Neil is entertaining. I was first attracted to the produced comedy bits his show has always featured, but later realized that his rants were actually the opinions of an intelligent, caring individual. Many who listen to him, especially those who don’t share his views but can’t seem to turn him off, might say he is nothing more than a bitter, old queen (those may be his own words, if not a direct quote, certainly in context). They might even say he is a man who hates America and everything it stands for. I would have to strongly disagree, because buried within those raves and rants are the words of a man who cares a great deal about his country, and someone who tries to expose injustice, inequality, intolerance, bigotry, and loss of liberty in an unfair and often bizarre, hateful world. “Neil God” often ridicules the newest breed of media gods and goddesses, and outwardly denounces the power and influence held by organized religion as well as the evangelism, attempted persuasion, self-righteous opinions of the followers of the various faiths. One of his Boca Brian standards is the hilarious “My Religion” sung by stereotypical members of the various faiths to the tune of the Ken-L-Ration commercial song, “My dog’s better than your dog…” Sometimes labeled a “shock jock”, I would only agree in the sense that the pure truth and nothing but the truth can be shocking, and while I think personalities of that genre are often a manufactured act, in “Uncle Neil’s” case, the shocking aspect of his show is just Neil Rogers being himself. I think if Neil ever met me, he probably wouldn’t like me, and if he ever read this, he would probably find it offensive, and accuse me of having “no life”. But that’s okay, because Neil, if you’ve taught me anything in over a quarter century, it’s not to take yourself too seriously.
