Michelle Obama's world vision
Monday was the beginning of the Democratic National Convention, and while there were high points and low points, the two keynote speakers came through and delivered. Ted Kennedy, representing the “Old Guard”, with his courage and undying commitment to the liberal goals of fighting for the little guy, in the words of his brother John, passed the torch to the next generation. And representing the New Guard, the torch was passed to a beautiful, eloquent, tear wrenching Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama showed the world her human side, but more importantly proved why she is married to the likes of Barack Obama, she shares his vision for the country, and the world. She recalled how her husband chose to make a difference in the community, and in particular, one speech Barack gave early in his political career, where he spoke about "The world as it is" and "The world as it should be." To accept the status quo over what could be is often the easier, “safer” road to take. But true Americans who care more about the future of this country, and who want to make a difference cannot accept the fear of making change. It is those Americans who are dropping their generational views of race and tradition, and are really hearing the words of a black man, and judging him not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character. The world “as it is” is a world where special interests rule the world in the name of obscene profits while they throw the average citizens an occasional bone. It is a world where health care is still a privilege instead of a human right. It is a world where hate prevails over harmony, hunger over nourishment, and persecution over freedom. The world as it is sometimes seems to be a world that will never be as it should. The only way this world will ever change, is for every citizen of every country to stand up and demand a change from their leaders, based on ideals of peace, prosperity and unselfishness, and if they refuse, those leaders should be removed. We are once again at that moment in our history, when we as citizens of this country have the right to do just that, in a peaceful manner. We can choose leadership which by the very philosophy of their party, see the world through the lens of conservatism, and fight ferociously and often dirty to preserve the world as it is. Or, come November we can choose a man who is not afraid to face change, and who visualizes a different world, the world as it should be. But Americans are not easy to sell. All of the ducks must be in a row, and they must all pass the test. Michelle Obama took a major step last night in passing her own test, and proved to the world that she was no shallow elitist. She proved by her words, that she is ready and able to be the First Lady of this country, a First Lady that we could be proud of, in the traditions of the Old Guard. But only if we vote for change.
