McCain redefines "winning"

After repeated statements over the last couple days by top Iraqi officials calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops by the end of 2010, John McCain who has blasted Barack Obama for his 16 month timetable, has just had an epiphany of sorts, and according to Reuters news service now suddenly thinks that we could have troops “largely withdrawn” in two years.

In typical McCain fashion, he takes all the credit for this dramatic reversal of the stance which he held even a few days ago, based on the success of the surge. Yes, the surge has had a positive effect on the situation, but it has taken over 5 years and the lives of over 4100 Americans to reach this point. One can only say it’s about time, considering Bush made his triumphantly staged, “Mission Accomplished” speech over 2 years ago.

John McCain has set a constantly shifting scale of what it means to win in Iraq, and has even stated that we may be there for 100 years. Suddenly, thanks to him, we’re down to 2 years now. Not because of the Generals directing the strategies, not because of the work of the Iraqi police forces, not because of the men and women of the U.S. armed forces who serve, not because of the sacrifices of the Iraqi people trapped in a war zone, but all thanks to him.

When the war started, we were lead to believe that we were invading Iraq to save the world from Saddam Hussein and his stockpiled weapons of mass destruction. Winning meant destroying Saddam and his WMD’s. No WMD’s were found and Saddam has been long captured and executed. The definition of winning had to be redefined.

Then winning meant stopping Al-Qaeda operatives in Iraq, never mind that Al-Qaeda didn’t move into Iraq until we succeeded in destabilizing the country by destroying their infrastructure and Iraqi security forces. Now that gains have been made on those fronts, the definition of winning shifted to meaning opposing Barack Obama in the 2008 election. Chris Hayes of the Nation stated today, John McCain’s “strategic objective is to stay”, and throughout this election John McCain has “defined leaving as losing”.

The reasons for perpetuating this war are a combination of garnering fear votes and big business, and neither John McCain nor George W. Bush wants the Republican party to lose the White House which would in turn cause their stocks to decline. So they keep pounding the drums of war, filling America with fear and reasons why we should stay in Iraq even if the Iraqis don’t want us there, and it has nothing to do with winning or losing, honor or dishonor. It has everything to do with maintaining power and fulfilling lucrative contracts, and in the end, we all lose, except for a few multi-millionaires pulling the puppet strings.
