Karl Rove: Above the Law, totally!

Originally posted: July 30th, 2008

The LA Times’ Johanna Neuman asks the question:

“Karl Rove in contempt: Is it justice or a witch hunt?”

Johanna, the question is easy to answer, of course it’s contempt. He hadn’t been charged with a crime, he was being asked to testify in the Appellate case of corruption charges against former Governor Don Siegelmann. The court’s way of asking is by subpoena. According to the law, I always thought that if you were subpoenaed, you had to testify. Based on his disregard for U.S. law he would have most likely pleaded the 5th Amendment throughout his testimony anyway, but he has to at least show up.

Even worse than pleading the 5th, and probably upset over being inconvenienced by missing lunch, Rove flat out refused to appear. When the House Judiciary Committee issued the contempt citing, his attorney issued the following statement:

“He has declined to appear because he was directed not to do so by the president of the United States. While we understand that the committee disagrees with the legal position that the president has taken, punishing Mr. Rove will not vindicate the committee's authority. Neither will a contempt vote resolve the dispute.”

Karl Rove’s version of the law answers only to the President of the United States. His level of arrogance is even higher than the collective arrogance of the entire Bush Administration. Though Bush was at least elected to office he too is showing enough presidential arrogance to block justice and waste the taxpayers money by forcing Congress to litigate against an appointee who like many other Presidential appointees, never had any business being that close to the most powerful man in the United States. Still the media, the White House, and most inexplicably the Justice Department, are unwilling to act to serve justice, which had been to hear what little testimony Karl Rove would actually provide. Rove should have been taken into custody the day he missed his first appointment in court, and held until he did testify, because if anyone profiles as a flight risk, thumb-on-his-nose, middle-finger extended, mooning at the law Karl Rove does.

Karl Rove believes that all men are created as equal as their connections allow them to be, and Karl Rove is confident that he is much better connected than you and me.

William S. James, Willing to testify, but knows nothing.
