Jorge Rodriguez: All kinda pissed off

Jorge was pissed today, and it was great. Normally, Jorge Rodriguez, perennial side-kick on the 560 WQAM, Neil Roger’s Show, doesn’t want to do “serious”, but today Jorge was focused and “all kinda pissed off”. But what was most amazing today, was that he was getting hot and bothered about politics. When the boss is there, Jorge is usually the mellow, “anti-political” side of the often politically charged commentary throughout the show.

Jorge started today with a rave about the all the media coverage of the upcoming Chinese Olympics, and then ranted about the “Presidential” visit, and how it represented a two-faced policy, when compared to the treatment of the Castro regime in Cuba. Jorge gave his opinions with a well-paced delivery and thoughtful commentary, when in the framework of his favorite "sex" and "complaining-about-not-getting-enough-sex" format, it seemed almost out of place. Jorge will also talk passionately about sign language, horror flicks, vintage toys, marital bliss and Roller Derby, but to talk at length about Presidential politics is something he avoids on the air whenever possible.

I guess the audacity, the corruption, the self-interest, the political derisiveness, and alleged criminal behavior of this President has finally gotten to Jorge, because it was the first time I’ve ever heard him talking so seriously and intensely about something that didn’t involve women in some shape or form.

The cool part about it was that almost every word Jorge said in the first thirty minutes of today's show was right on the money. The Right is wrong, and the Right is all about the money, driven by greed.

If it weren’t for China’s huge export and import markets, with their slave-labor manufacturing prices, George Bush wouldn’t be at the Olympics right now, instead he’d have acted like an American President who does as he claims, that he’s fighting for freedom everywhere. If only he could fight all his wars as hard as he’s fighting for the oil in Iraq, or as hard as he’s negotiating for the cheap labor in China, lobbying and setting up deals for his corporate and industry executives back home.

Screwing up traffic in China, and possibly taking away security from some innocent athlete, Bush has U.S. and Chinese security forces following him around, so he can meet LeBron James (no relation) and Cobe Bryant. Instead, he should have released a statement denouncing China’s human rights record, he should have planned talks on Larry King with the Dalai Lama during the Friday night ceremonies, or anything else politically possible to further the cause of individual freedom in China. Exploitation of the Chinese people in the name of pure capitalism is not the same as a free society even if some forms of "free" enterprise are now permitted.

Somewhere between bombing Beijing and attending the Olympic Opening Ceremonies in Beijing, there’s a lot that the Bush Administration could have done to send a different message on behalf of the American people. There has to be more in this deal for America than just losing tens of thousands of jobs to the slave-labor force of the Chinese nation, and in return receiving cheaply made, and even dangerous products. Somehow free-trade, and free-markets have backfired, as we’re seeing an enormous amount of American wealth exported with the blessing of the government and big business. But don't fret, business is good, and the rich on both sides of the pacific are getting richer. Meanwhile, the massive share of America which has been sold out by the special interests with the help of the government, used to belong to the middle class, now it's gone, and they’re the ones who lost, big time.

While it may not change the economy, and it may not change the election, especially not in this state, change requires individual action from men like Jorge Rodriguez to speak their minds, because while he may not be talking to millions at a time, he is reaching thousands, and freedom of speech is like a seed, it grows, it buds, and then it burns away into creativity, which in turn sprouts the expression of freedom. No licking of any kind ever intended here. Party-on Jorge, speak your mind, and don’t ever apologize for what you say, because sometimes in the daily grind of producing media content, it's inevitable that some days will consist of plenty of filler too.
