John McCain the Maverick is Dead
The last few days have seen the end of an American mythological hero, we’ve witnessed the death of the legend of John McCain, “the Maverick”. Dictionary.com defines “maverick” as it is being used when referring to John McCain as follows: mav•er•ick - noun a lone dissenter, as an intellectual, an artist, or a politician, who takes an independent stand apart from his or her associates. There might have been a time when that definition fit John McCain, but as the Democratic Party along with many of his old friends have been quick to point out, the John McCain of the past, the Maverick, has nothing to do whatsoever with John McCain the candidate, who would sell his soul to the devil to win. John McCain’s final breaths as a maverick were taken at the end of last week, when he caved into his party’s base of far-right, Evangelical Christians, and chose Alaska’s Governor, Sarah Palin as his running mate in November. Based on media reports, it’s no secret that she was no higher than his third choice, but for all we know, in reality she may have even been his fourth or fifth choice. If McCain had chosen either of his first two choices, Joe Lieberman or Tom Ridge, both believers in pro-choice, the evangelicals promised a floor fight at this week’s Republican National Convention that could have sealed their fate two months before the general election. So desperate to win, and caving into the ultra-conservatives who run the Republican Party, John McCain got down on his knees, asked for their forgiveness, and chose one of the most conservative politicians he could find. But even more calculating, he chose someone he had only met twice before, a woman, in the hopes of garnering some disillusioned Hillary Clinton voters. In essence, John McCain put himself and his “I’ll do anything to win” attitude, before what’s best for the country, and the Devil made him do it. Predictably, the Republicans are crying foul as the so-called “liberal media” and the American people ask the questions we should ask of anyone running for the number two post in the land. These are the same people who for the last several months they have lead the crusade questioning every word Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and anyone they’ve ever known, has ever spoken. But now, the Grand Old Party, whose base would love to see nothing less than a United States Christian Theocracy, take offense that anyone would dare question their choice. Regardless of her experience, regardless of her views, and regardless of her experience, because she is an Evangelical against abortion of any kind, and because she is a life-long member of the National Rifle Association, this Angel of God fits the Right-Wing mold perfectly. Sarah Palin has been declared sacrosanct, and off-limits to any scrutiny whatsoever. Yes, the Old Maverick is dead, and within hours of his demise, before he had even been given his last rites, the GOP had blessed, and crowned his successor, the gun-toting beauty queen from Alaska, Sarah Palin, Evangelical Christian, angel, heroine, and maverick.
