Has America lost its ingenuity?
Has America lost its ingenuity? Let’s hope not. Many of the people who frequent the millions of blogs that dot the world of the web are so young, even World War II is little more than a chapter in their history books, destined to be skimmed over as quickly as any other chapter of “ancient” history. Those of us who are Baby-Boomers know otherwise, because World War II, even though it was over, permeated the fabric of our lives, until we almost drowned in it. Hollywood bombarded us with war flicks, and television documentaries about WW II still abound. When I was a young teen, and then on into my twenties, I used to listen to my grandparents, my parents, and everyone else 10 years older than me, and when they talked about the war, believe me it came up often, I used to wish they would just get over it. Eventually, even I realized what a profound life-changing ordeal it was, and understood the bravery they exhibited when they undertook the task. The true depth of the accomplishment had been revealed to my heart, and suddenly I got it. That generation used their ingenuity time and time again, to turn the tables on what seemed to be an unbeatable foe. Their bravery was boundless, but their ingenuity to find new and better ways to accomplish a goal, in addition to their ability to adapt and survive incomprehensible hardship is what won the war. It was all fueled by their unity. It started here at home. Once the cause was clear and the country was committed, the government and the private sector displayed unprecedented harmony in rapidly building and supplying a military force that would be substantial enough to challenge, engage and defeat Hitler and his Axis powers. It continued into the employment of those forces, and was proven again as the American public used their unification towards a common goal, and found the ingenuity to increase efficiency and production in keeping their massive national machinery supplied and fueled. America was inspired into unity, and the end result was ingenuity. The rest was history, and the sum of its actions launched this country into world leadership, leadership that went beyond military power. America’s world leadership was based on an idealism that went beyond its actions. In World War II, the motivation was pure, we had been attacked. Yes, that was the launching pad, and it engaged us on many fronts simultaneously. We were victorious on all fronts, because of bravery and ingenuity. Maybe America only needs to rekindle that ingenuity to find unity. William S. James, not quite speechless |
