Guns, God, and Saint Sarah
Why is it that Right-wing, Evangelical Christians are so hung up on guns? They proudly thump their bibles and quote scripture while they lock-and-load their weapons and praise the Lord. Then with God on their side, they shoot anything and everything within their scope sights, and God forbid if you happen to be there, because if you are, you will soon see St. Peter at the pearly gates. For years, I’ve tried to put the correlation together and have concluded that the only explanation is the “hillbilly” make-up of the Bible Belt. They draw their Evangelical philosophy and inspiration from the bible, in their rural and small town homes. With few of the same temptations that draw the city-slickers towards the fires of hell, life changes very slowly in the Bible Belt, and the church remains their primary source of philosophy and social contact with other humans. Guns have historically been one of the most important tools a rural dweller has had to help add diversity and protein to the family dinner table, and in that setting, I can’t think of many who would want to deny them that luxury. But in modern times the importance of that dimension of the argument has greatly diminished. Guns helped form this country, and it was the militia-men of the colonies, drawing their weapons from the rack above the fireplace, which formed the ragtag impromptu Revolutionary Army that secured our freedom from the tyranny of the King. But though the proponents of the 2nd Amendment point to the protection of our country as the fundamental reason to abstain from restricting guns in any way, in modern day America, with one of the most powerful military machines in the world, the validity of this viewpoint rings false. Enemies of today’s United States would never succeed in invading our shores with an army. Instead they would attack from afar, or from within, using immigration or a visitor’s visa to gain access to our soil. Or even more seriously, they would simply exploit the American economy to buy and control the assets of this country, one building and parcel at a time, waging war from within by draining the economic wealth of America to their accounts abroad. On the other hand, guns in the cities and inner-cities have become an incarnation of the Devil himself as they are used to commit crimes and terrorize neighborhoods and people throughout this country. Hundreds of people, mostly children die, from accidents caused when a loaded gun gets into the hands of a child or person who doesn’t know of the existence of a hair-trigger. "Guns don't kill, people do", but it's the uncontrolled access to guns that put them in the hands of those killers. Holding their bible in one hand, and their pistol in the other, these Christian soldiers create religious philosophy from their own minds as they try to justify its teachings in today’s very different world, and in the same way interpret the 2nd Amendment to fit life as we live it in the 21st century. We've just finished the Republican National Convention, where guns and God were a major theme. With the canonization of the gun-toting Saint Sarah, the crowd went wild every time God or guns were mentioned, and her rich gun past was glorified in the name of the Lord. Sarah saves, and no doubt she’ll exorcize the Devil from our shores with an M16. Thank God for Saint Sarah and her very busy womb, as we have all finally seen the light. William S. James, Don't shoot! |
