Grover Norquist - racist: Describes Obama as "John Kerry with a tan"
Why is America still such a racist country? We’ve been on a long journey to stamp out racism, and have gone far, but it’s obvious we have a long way to go. As top Republicans continue their code-worded attacks on Barack Obama they want to remind racist America of the color of the man’s skin by using not so subtle references. The latest Republican bigot who has made national news, is Grover Norquist, who on Friday described Obama as “John Kerry with a tan”. Not long before that was Pat Buchanan’s description of Obama as “exotic”. Haven’t we learned anything from the Emancipation Proclamation, The Thirteenth Amendment, the Civil Rights Act and over 150 years of struggle? When Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, in the shadows of the memory of the very man who had the courage to engage in this nation’s second true war of freedom, he talked of a day when his children, or any children, regardless of their race “will not be judged by the color of their skin, but the content of their character.” It’s obvious that in his statement, Grover Norquist is not only trying to subtly remind bigoted voters of Barack Obama’s African-American blood, but also tries to minimize the content of Obama’s character because he does not agree with the man’s political views. Essentially, he is saying that Barack Obama is dangerous on two fronts. He is a Liberal, and a man of color. What’s worse is to realize that people like Grover Norquist are much more common than we think. Racist swill about Obama can be found all over the internet, in forums and blogs, perpetuating hate and bigotry. If I were given the task to judge Norquist by the content of his character, since I have never met the man, I could only judge him by his public life as a “Political Strategist” and “Lobbyist” and the ignorance of his Harvard educated elitist statements. What I see is a man who will stop at nothing to advance the interests of the Far-Right, and all in the name of greed. His pet rock is tax reform, because he and his like-minded Republican buddies, including George W. Bush, and Dick Cheney don’t feel that caring for the American people has anything to do with the mission or responsibility of the U.S. Government. Their version of government focuses on protecting the interests of CEO’s and the richest Americans by providing them with personal and corporate loopholes. John McCain, in his desperate effort to appeal to the staunch conservative base of the Republican Party is also coming around to the Norquist side of life. You and I mean nothing to these people. We are only there to serve them and to do the low-wage common jobs through which their corporations reap obscene profits. These low-wage jobs which filthy rich corporate moguls justify in the name of capitalistic profits were a hallmark of Ronald Reagan’s failed “trickle down” economics, and are just another form of the slavery the 13th Amendment was intended to stop. But come November, just remember that this is not a Presidential race of skin color and division as Grover Norquist would like you to believe. This is a race of unity and character content. Judge the candidates by their intelligence, based on the policies and solutions they offer to solve the important issues of our era. And then make your choice at the polls, sending a clear message to the likes of Norquist, that their rape of this country is over. “Free at last! Free at last!” William S. James, Dreamer |
