Governor Crist betrays Florida Voters
Florida’s Governor, Charlie Crist has sold out his own constituents and betrayed them, by joining the Great Republican Flip-Flop on the question of lifting the ban on offshore drilling. There have been plenty of well-publicized rumors that he is a frontrunner as a possible choice as John McCain’s running mate and this seems to add a great deal of weight to those rumors. The Republican strategy machine is betting that they can sway voters to support their obviously out-of-touch candidate, by attempting to once again paint the picture that the country is in its current state because of Democratic policies. The scary part, is that if people become desperate enough, it could work. Americans may well be moving towards a myopic viewpoint of the big picture by turning their entire focus on only one thing, the cost of gas. This near-sightedness can blind the American public to the reality that it is the Bush Administration’s subservience to special interests and its total failure to act wisely, or at all on many issues that has driven us into our current state. President Bush’s call to lift the offshore drilling ban, one day after John McCain’s pandering speech on Tuesday should be proof enough that McCain’s election would be a 3rd Bush term as many are predicting. You might say it would be, “Bad business as usual”. Governor Crist looks to be an important cog in this same fear-mongering, special interest, right-wing machine, and I believe a lot of people in the State of Florida are shaking their heads in disbelief and anger. Crist was quoted on Tuesday as saying, "I mean, let's face it, the price of gas has gone through the roof, and Florida families are suffering. And my heart bleeds for them." But Governor Crist, despite McCain’s exaggerated assurances that oil drilling technology has made it almost fool-proof, and ecologically safe, are you willing to gamble the bread and butter of this state’s economy on a chance to become John McCain’s Vice-President? In 2004, tourism generated $57 billion for the Florida economy, $3 billion more than the state’s entire budget for fiscal 2004-2005. Tourism paid the Governor’s salary, along with the rest of state’s budgeted expenditures, and the Governor is suddenly willing to risk this income, hoping to save a few cents at the pump five to ten years from now. But the Governor’s stand, when asked about his sudden change in position, is a typical case of political fence straddling. He claims to not necessarily be for drilling off of Florida’s coast, but he wants the Federal protections to be removed and leave it up to each state to decide. By leaving it up to the Florida Legislature to decide, and admitting that he is not sure how they would vote, he is able to side-step the possibility of it actually happening, and then blame them if the drilling is allowed and there is some kind of mishap that damages the fragile Florida ecosystem and its tourist industry. He further acknowledges that by leaving it up to the states, even if Florida rejected offshore drilling, and a neighboring state had a mishap, Florida’s beaches could be threatened or damaged. Yet still, with all these arguments, and all the assurance’s on this issue he gave Florida voters in 2006 when he ran to become our 44th Governor, Charlie Crist now thinks it’s a good idea. Apparently he must have gotten some pretty solid promises on that Memorial Day weekend at McCain’s Arizona ranch, and apparently he won the sack race, because now it looks as though he’s not interested in finishing out his four year term as Governor, and he certainly doesn’t look like a man who’s concerned with re-election in 2010. He looks a lot like a man who sold-out his former employer for a new one. That’s okay Charlie, no employees are irreplaceable, but at least give us two weeks notice, or it will be difficult for Florida voters to give you a good reference to your new boss. |
