George Bush’s trip to Europe. Thoughts on Presidential diplomacy.

President Bush is in Slovenia today on a week-long Lame Duck tour of Europe, and for a man who obviously knows nothing about diplomacy, we need to hold our breaths and hope he doesn’t embarrass the American public once again.

Thankfully, it seems that the European public is fairly apathetic about George Bush. They are really just waiting to see who will be next. Don’t get me wrong, they’re not apathetic about America and Americans, just their unilateralist President. Europeans and the rest of the world are not stupid, and they view our actions without the nationalistic fervor that so often consumes and convinces Americans to play follow the leader as the patriotic thing to do. They see George Bush for what he really is, a man with the right name and family connections, who is in water way over his head as one of the most powerful men in the world community.

If George W. Bush has been right and honest about anything during his two long terms, it is that we are at war. Our enemies are not the Arab world or Islam. Our enemy is fundamentalist extremism and intolerance of any kind, regardless of faith or national origin. And make no mistake, our enemy exists in some form in every religion, and the country of residence has nothing to do with the manifestation of hate.

Throughout the primaries, I heard the debate over the candidates’ approach to diplomacy, something at which this current administration has failed miserably. The fundamental question of whether or not the President should engage in talks with the leaders of nations for which we take issue without a laundry list of preconditions is not one that should be taken lightly, as diplomacy is drenched in nuance. But without steadily advancing dialogue from the lower levels to the top levels, there is no diplomacy.

We can be sure about one thing. America’s stature as a philosophical world leader has deteriorated. Though the guise of our actions is often presented to be in the name of democracy or human rights, the truth of the matter is that we often act based more on our capitalistic interests than any idealistic notion, and that’s what makes the impurity of our actions so transparent. Until the world community once again begins to trust us, we will forced into this Wild West, unilateral corner and continue to be villanized by people of less means or opposing views. We cannot continue in this direction.

When you go to the polls in November, choose with your heart, but make your choice based on the big picture of this country’s standing in the world community, and choose whatever candidate you feel will improve this country’s place on the side of good, untainted by greed and power.
