FactCeck.org cuts the political crap
We are a little more than thirteen weeks away from the general election and there is so much information being thrown at us, it's difficult to know what is true and what is false, what is accurate and what is exaggerated, what is hype and what is downplay, what is opinion and what is fact. In short, it’s getting about waist deep out there. As more and more people from a wide range of age groups get more and more news from the internet, it makes sense that there, you can find some of the best news and information sources available. Internet news services are not dependent on image conscious talking heads, and in general, are not beholden to sponsors, corporate pressure, ratings, and a host of other economic factors that dictate what television news services broadcast. Newspapers are rapidly seeing their loyal readership shifting from newsprint to internet news feeds, and the cost of delivering that news on the internet is significantly lower. The problem with internet information is that anyone with a computer, a high-speed internet service provider, a few hundred bucks, a small amount of computer savvy, a decent eye for pleasing visual design (or not), and plenty of time on their hands, can get a functional site up and running. This is actually a two-sided coin, because on the “heads” side of the coin, the internet has opened up instantaneous information delivery system to millions of people, while on the “tails” side of that coin, it makes it more difficult for the reader and viewer to sift through the facts, and to be blunt, the information provided just stinks. Enter FactCheck.org. This helpful site sifts through all the spin and crap that is being slung in this election from both camps, and in the words of Sergeant Joe Friday, gives “just the facts”. The way FactCheck.org dissects the various campaign ads and statements is refreshing, and at the same time discouraging, because it reveals the true face of American politics. Americans want leaders who are up front, honest, and intelligent. They hope that their candidates are seeking office to serve the people, more than they serve themselves. Broadcast media has gotten way out of control, to the point where they even call themselves names and complain about each other. When the reporting becomes the top story, it is an indication that somehow, something has gone terribly wrong. Some 24 Hour NewsBots are obviously on one side or the other, right or left, and the programming is slanted as steeply as a downhill ski ramp. The ones that are even more confusing are those that claim to be unbiased. But in their effort to create hype, they lean towards negative reporting, searching for the angle of story that sells and shocks, and is then commented upon exhaustively by a panel of experts who are heavily biased. FactCheck.org seems to have broken the mold for unbiased observation across the board. The statement or ad is presented in its original state, and is then dissected with the skill of a brain surgeon, using statistics and historical context to expose the inaccuracies and lies. But what makes it even more refreshing is that its existence challenges all comers, to step up to the plate and cut the crap. In other words, “put up, or shut up”, because otherwise you will be exposed. Sadly enough, FactCheck.org should have a long and brilliant cyber life, because if this election gives us any indication of what’s to come for future elections, and what we can expect from bi-partisan politics and politicians, we will really and truly need them for many years to come.
