Chuck picks a college
It was the winter of 1973, and Chuck was living with his girl friend in South Florida. Every day on his way to his job as an orderly at a Fort Lauderdale hospital, he passed the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, located at Las Olas and A-1-A in the Holiday Inn, right in the heart of Spring Break territory. The school shared the building with the hotel, its restaurants and meeting rooms, rooftop pool, the world famous Button on the Beach, the Ocean movie theater, and a small indoor and outdoor strip center. And every day Chuck drove by, there were chicks everywhere. There were chicks on the streets, chicks on the stairs, chicks on the corners, chicks running across the street, all dressed casually, skimpily, and all carrying cool stuff like tackle boxes, illustration boards, canvases, and giant leather portfolios. Not only were they hot, but the whole scene was hot. At first Chuck didn’t know what the place was, and he started taking different routes so he could see the place from all angles. Finally he saw it was an art school, and realized it had been under his nose all the time. He realized he had spent his first Spring Break night in that movie theater right next door to the school entrance. It had cost $5 dollars to spend the night in the theater, and they played Woodstock and another “flick” Chuck can’t remember. It was one of the craziest party schools on one of the craziest corners of its time. During Spring break the pace was blistering, people were everywhere, and they all had partying on their minds, but even during the summer, there was action around every corner. Chuck had picked a college, and Chuck was to become one happy, hippy painter. |
