Charlie Black, the politics of fear

Charlie Black, one of John McCain’s most senior political “advisors” made a comment in an interview with Fortune Magazine, in which he said that a terrorist attack in the United States "would be a big advantage to (John McCain)." Black went on further to say that the assassination of Pakistani political leader Benazir Bhutto in December was an "unfortunate event" showing "(John McCain's) knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who's ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us," Of course Charlie Black was referring to “his” candidate John McCain and "his" run for President.

John McCain did the only thing he could do, and that was to vehemently denounce the statement.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton later said, "The fact that John McCain's top advisor says that a terrorist attack on American soil would be a ‘big advantage’ for their political campaign is a complete disgrace, and is exactly the kind of politics that needs to change…"

Calls for McCain to fire Charlie Black, are being heard far and wide, but I’m not sure why? Firing Charlie Black won’t accomplish anything, because there are dozens more waiting in the wings to replace him. Dozens more who will stop at nothing to promote the hate and fear that seems to have become commonplace in Republican politics. There are dozens more who will gladly smear the Democratic candidate regardless of who it is. It could have been Edwards, or Clinton and it would have been the same. The tactic may have been changed ever so slightly, but because the campaign of fear worked so well in 2004, it will surely be raised time and time again into ad nauseum between now and November. John McCain could stop it if he really wanted to, but I’m not so sure he really wants to, or even scarier for a man who wishes to be President, I’m not so sure he knows how. Besides, trailing in the polls on many of the pertinent issues the way he is, it may be all they have.

Barack Obama is repeatedly asking the American people to vote for change, and Bill Burton is right when he points to this as another perfect example of what needs to be changed.

I don’t think anybody really believes that Chuck Black actually wants to see a terrorist attack on U.S. soil or anywhere else in the world, but to have a man who would have this in the back of his mind, for the sake of electing a candidate, and then for that same man to possibly have a direct line to the President of the United of the United States would be something to fear. But then for someone at that level in the campaign, to say it in public for all the terrorists in the world to hear is too irresponsible to believe.

So Chuck, do John McCain and the country you claim to love so much a favor, step down, and join Rush and all the other fear and hate mongers, and have yourselves a Hate and Fear Hootenanny on whatever syndicated channel you think it will sell, but stay the hell out of this country’s politics. People like you are one more reason why this country has fallen so low in the eyes of the rest of the world along with our economy. The idealism and freedom that separated us from most other nations is being tarnished more and more each day by the raised middle finger attitude of people like you who will stop at nothing to achieve their own unilateral self-interest agenda.
