Bush takes a lesson from Obama

All of a sudden, it seems as though the Bush Administration is taking lessons from Barack Obama, the so-called “Junior” Senator who has been labeled repeatedly as someone lacking in ample experience to lead this country. In the last week the White House has announced two radical shifts in policy towards his point of view, for which the Right has hammered at Obama since the campaigning started.

On the question of negotiating with governments labeled as enemies of the state, without pre-conditions, Obama from the very beginning has stated that we should, in order to open dialogue for more comprehensive negotiations that will be fruitful in reaching our specific goals and interests connected with the “enemy” state and government. John McCain has denounced this repeatedly, and has said that in doing so we would be sending the wrong message and encouraging governments considered renegades by the world community. George Bush has stood firm on this same viewpoint throughout his two terms, with the result being not only a stagnant foreign policy, but a foreign policy that has had negative results in our standing as a world leader, at a time when the free nations of this world need more than ever to align in fighting the real terrorists, as well as those regimes who commit genocide and have miserable human rights records, regardless of whether or not there are economic gains to be realized.

About face! Today the number three man in the State Department is taking part in multi-lateral meetings with Iran’s top nuclear official in Geneva, Switzerland. Also, this week reports have surfaced that the U.S. is considering establishing a diplomatic post in Teheran. The Bush Administration is playing down these “shifts” not as a reversal in policy but as a shift to seize an opportunity to state our position and improve relations with Iran. This is exactly the type of opportunistic moment that Obama has pointed out he would take, and for which he received so much flack for supporting over the last few months. Of course, Bush officials have denied any significant change in the government’s policy, and have denied that they are doing the very thing Obama has proposed he would do if elected President. The truth is, there is very little difference if any, no matter how they spin it. This shift is welcome, and the Bush Administration should be applauded for their efforts, if in doing so, it can possibly diffuse the world community’s standoff over Iran’s program to develop nuclear weapons, especially in the context of the publicized missile testing that Iran has recently done. Iran having nuclear weapons could be a real threat to world stability, and containment of this program is vital to keeping peace in the area and the world. If only the Right could admit not necessarily that they were wrong, but at least stop saying that Obama’s position is wrong. Of course, that is not going to happen.

About face! On Friday, the Bush Administration announced that the President has agreed to a “general time horizon” for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. This abrupt shift in stance was formulated after a video conference call between President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki on Thursday. While the Bush spinmeisters refuse to admit to setting any actual timetable, Prime Minister Maliki on Saturday told German Magazine Der Spiegel, that Barack Obama’s timetable of 16 months “is right”, and that Iraq wants the U.S. troops out of Iraq as soon as possible. Once again this is an issue for which Obama has taken a tremendous amount of heat, and has been repeatedly challenged by McCain as uniformed and naïve, yet it is entirely in step with the Iraqi leadership which we are supposed to be supporting.

Suddenly, based on these moves by President Bush, Barack Obama is looking to be someone who has not only a pretty good handle on economic issues, but also someone who has strong leadership abilities in forming viable foreign policy, something that has been a sounding point for the Right from day one. Now if only the students could admit that their young teacher has actually done them some good. Like many young people, they’ll never admit to that, and will endlessly find a way to prove that it was their own policy “evolving”, and had nothing to do with their teacher. And the spin will go on and on that the right is right and the left is wrong. But then again, that’s partisan politics.
