Bush goes for gold in Beijing

President Bush announced on Thursday that he’s going to Beijing for the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympic Games in August, and once again the hypocrisy of the Right knows no bounds.

When discussing the President’s upcoming visit to China, CNN’s frequent Right-Wing commentator Lars Larson thinks it’s a great idea. His smugness suggests that only ignorant Pinkos could see it any other way. Of course Lars Larson sounds that way about everything he discusses.

According to Larson, when John Mcain changes his mind, it’s Presidential, and he appreciates a President who can change his mind based on new “intelligence”. Not something the Bush Administration could ever claim to have done. If Barack Obama changes his mind on anything it’s flip-flopping or “refining” of his position. McCain change, good; Obama change, flip-flop, Obama bad. He predicts Senator Obama will be forced to “refine” his stance on Iraq, once he goes there as planned. He claims that when Obama sees the progress of the ground operations, and after he visits with the Generals in charge of the American military forces, he will have no choice but to back the war. However, again, there is a difference between supporting and protecting our troops while you find a way to extricate them from harms way, and just yanking them out as the Right would like you to believe.

Lars has also been extremely critical of Obama’s stance concerning considering meeting with leaders of enemy regimes for diplomatic talks without preconditions. Obama points out that in the name of diplomacy, it can be appropriate to jump-start a diplomatic dialogue with a regime, but only when you can be confident that in doing so you will be able to realize actual gains towards a diplomatic solution. The Far-Right immediately started painting pictures of Obama negotiating with Al-Qaeda, and hobnobbing with Raul Castro. In their constant effort to smear, the Far-Right is attempting to distort Obama’s words.

Now George W. Bush, perhaps one of the most Special-interest oriented Presidents in history, will honor the Chinese with his glorious presence at the spectacle that is the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games. His presence will honor the Chinese government, and give legitimacy to historically, one of world’s worst violators of human rights within their own national boundaries. He will also deflect the world’s attention from China’s violent repression of the Tibetans and their religious beliefs, as well as the Chinese government’s almost capitalistic policies in Sudan which support the perpetrators of genocide. On one thing both President Bush and President Hu can agree, if there’s money to be made they’re there.

Bush defends the trip, “I view the Olympics as a opportunity for me to cheer on our athletes. It's an athletic event.”

Make no mistake about it, there is no similarity whatsoever when making the comparison between what Bush is doing, and what Barack Obama has merely proposed as a possibility to consider. Barack Obama would meet with the enemy to engage in hard-fought, diplomacy as a means to an end or as the way to find a new peace. Bush is going on a waving tour of China, and at best, will somehow, unknowingly sign-away a few thousand more jobs. America’s greed for cheap goods is catching up in the race for world economic stability, and Bush is cheering on the winning team, the Chinese. This is not about sports, this about contracts and goods. Actually, it means, that this action is no different from any other Bush actions, and that this trip is no different from any other Presidential trip he’s ever been on. Except that on this trip to the Beijing Olympic Games, he’s hoping he might walk away with the gold.
