Braking news: Obama chooses Colin Powell as VP
12:27 Saturday This weekend’s big story is Barack Obama’s announcement of who his Vice-Presidential running-mate will be in November. It’s scheduled to take place in a few hours on Saturday morning, and though the media are in their usual frantic speculation mode, I’m not privileged to have their sources, but despite my handicap, I’ve found the ideal VP for Obama, and it would be an incredibly historic ticket. It won't happen, but it would be great. Bayh’s in Bayh’s out, Kaine’s in Kaine’s out. Hillary Clinton and her super-glue supporters, through their actions, have taken on an ever more, bitter and shrill tone of discord. Obama would have to be hard-pressed and desperate to choose Hillary. If I were him, I would offer her a seat on the Supreme Court as a pacifier (she actually would probably make an excellent Justice), and then hold her in a headlock until she accepted to send out a specially written letter calling for her supporters to campaign behind Obama, and against McCain. At one time I thought she was the best choice to consolidate all the Democratic voters who came out in the primaries and caucuses. But after her desperate clinging to a sinking ship, and then expecting the voters to pay for the loans she gave herself from her own money to bail out the ship, is an act of ego I don’t want in the White House. If I were on his VP search team, I believe I would ask Barack to approach one man, and approach him with care and intelligence, because the prospective VP candidate is a careful and intelligent man. He doesn’t have the same polarization factor as a Hillary, and in fact I believe he could help secure large numbers of veterans, minorities, and center-right voters. That man is Colin Powell. Colin Powell served as the first African-American to hold the office as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the first invasion of Iraq. He served under Reagan as the National Security Advisor, and under George W. Bush, as the first African-American Secretary of State. I can’t think of any person on this earth more qualified to serve as the Vice President. His advice on ending the war in Iraq would be invaluable, his international experience as Secretary State would go a long way silencing those who criticize Obama’s inexperience, and maybe more importantly, his centrist, pragmatic approach to the future is admirable, and would be a good fit for Obama. Powell could even possibly help turn the heads of some of the staunch working-class whites who may not trust Obama, but admire and respect Powell. The picture would be priceless, and I can see the bumper stickers now. So tomorrow when you get your text message from Obama Headquarters, just remember where you heard it first. William S. It would be a dream team. But so-called white America would never let two Africans into the White House, even two Oreos like Obama and Powell. So I doubt very much that Powell would be chosen, or even accept if he were chosen. I don't know who the Veep will be, but you can bet it will be someone of purely European ancestry.
