Barack Obama's balancing act between the right and left, east and west.

Today (Tuesday, June 24th), the New York Times published a story entitled “Muslim Voters detect a snub from Obama”, and I believe Democratic Representative Keith Ellison, the first Muslim ever to be sworn in as a U.S. Congressman has some merit in his argument. What I have to wonder though, is does he feel as if John McCain, George W. Bush, and the Republican Party have embraced Muslims?

Last week when Al Gore endorsed Obama in Detroit, two women wearing Islamic head scarves were kept from joining the crowd situated behind the speakers, in view of the camera by one of Obama’s surrogates. It was inexcusable, and afterwards elicited a personal apology from Barack Obama.

This is a serious ongoing problem for Obama, and a tightrope walk he needs to make as carefully as the Great Blondin’s crossing of Niagara Falls, because he is truly damned if does, and damned if he doesn’t. Proving this point, Barack Obama has another first. He is the first Presidential candidate from a major political party who is thought by millions of Americans to be a Muslim. While he is not, to many Americans simply his name implies that he is. This is stereotypical nonsense that is happily fueled by the Far Right who’s only desire is to spread fear. However, when Obama state’s the simple truth, that he is not a Muslim, it is then seen as offensive to the Muslim community, because what would be wrong with it if he were?

This sad state of affairs is not entirely the fault of Barack Obama, nor is it entirely the fault of political strategists. Much of the blame has to fall on a minority of Muslim extremists who have in the past, and continue to use terrorism as a means to promote their cause of political and religious extremism. Have Muslims and Arabs been persecuted and exploited by westerners? Absolutely. Does that justify terrorist acts killing innocent men women and children? Absolutely not. But much of the blame also has to fall on people of other faiths or political backgrounds who stereotype millions upon millions of law abiding Muslims based on the acts of extremists.

As long as the people of the world from all walks of life, from all national, political, religious, economic, and sexual origins continue to view the world from the simplistic view of “Us” and “Them”, we will continue to experience, wars, hatred, terrorism, poverty, religious persecution, racism, sexism, and hate crimes. And I’m afraid all candidates with aspirations to lead any democracy will find themselves walking the same tightrope Barack Obama now finds himself walking, even candidates who hope to bring an inclusive unity for all.

The voters are his only net, and his words are his long balancing pole. May they be not too far to the right, and not too far to the left. Not to far to the west, and not to far to the east, or he will surely fall.
