Barack Obama loses Florida

On Tuesday, Broward County held local primary elections for candidates and issues to be decided in November’s general election, and I am now convinced that Barack Obama will lose the State of Florida, just as Al Gore did in 2000. Not because any one candidate is more popular than the other, but because of the unwillingness of our senior citizens to evolve with changing times and technology, along with the incompetence of both our election and party officials. Earlier this year, the Democratic Party, in concert with our Republican run state legislature and governor, managed to get our Democratic primary votes disallowed, and it wasn't until after long negotiations by the DNC rules committee that they were partially reinstated, but even then, our votes did not count, one for one.

Fort Lauderdale is the sparkling jewel in Broward County’s crown, most famous for its annual Spring Break celebration. Now a thing of the past, Broward is the quiet liberal cousin, of conservative Cuban Miami-Dade to the south, and the poor relative of the Old Money of Palm Beach to the north. As a liberal enclave of over a million people in a mostly conservative state, unless every liberal vote cast in Broward counts, the chances of Obama carrying the State of Florida are greatly diminished.

For Tuesday’s trial run, Brenda Snipes, Broward County’s Supervisor of Elections, rolled out her technological breakthrough for the 2008 Presidential election, paper ballots, black Bic pens, and folding cardboard privacy booths sitting on top of folding tables. Add to the mix the high-tech electronic feeder boxes which are supposed to take my "secret" ballot, and suck it into safe, and secure, voting history. The feeder machines, which work like oversized dollar bill insert mechanisms you would find on vending machines, malfunctioned several times when trying to take my legal paper sized ballot, and I heard that the “paper jam” experience was not in any way unique.

At this point in time and advancement, in the year 2008, there is no reason why voting should not be totally automated, and protected with the proper security, back-up, and monitoring protocols in place to assure voters that every vote is counted for the candidate it was cast. There should be no possibility for error. Since the catastrophe of 2000, we had advanced from a punch card system, with their infamous “hanging chads”, to touch screen electronic voting that was easy to use, very clear as to who you were voting for, and fast, but apparently not for the large number of senior citizens in this county who cling so fervently to the "good old days". If the DNC does not want to lose Floida again to inexcusable voting mishaps, it should start its protests and lawsuits now, before it's too late.

Thinking back on Tuesday's experience, if I have any regrets, it is that I voted to re-elect Brenda Snipes for another term as Supervisor of Elections. Up until now, I had always thought that she had made positive changes that improved the voting process since she took office four years ago, but now I fear we may see a repeat of the debacle of 2000 by regressing back to the paper and pen technology of the 60’s. Without ensuring that Broward voters will be able to cast their votes easily and efficiently, some may become discouraged and not wait out the long lines that will surely form in November. And unless every possible Broward liberal vote is cast, and then counted, Brenda Snipes will have in effect, handed the state’s 27 electoral votes to John McCain, and with the fourth largest tally of electoral votes divided amongst the states, she will have done her part to help doom this country to four more years of the decline and desperation started by the Bush Administration eight years ago.
