Amsterdam: Be careful what you wish for
By William S. James
Amsterdam, precious Amsterdam, be careful what you wish for and don’t seek to change too much. Don’t give in to pressure from the moral and behavior police, and don’t close your minds or your borders to freedom. Freedom has its price, and nothing comes cheap. It is as a result of your freedom, that you leave yourself open to exposure from tourists who exploit and abuse the very welcome that your liberty and openness extends. But please don’t follow the path taken by many countries, and exchange your personal freedom for regulations intended to respond to the sometimes depraved and obnoxious actions of your visitors. For centuries you have proven to be experts at identifying the cause and needs created by a problem. By isolating the issues at hand, you attempt to react to them in an intelligent manner, creating solutions which preserve your national and local identity, while at the same time allowing you to recognize and tolerate the rich diversity of your people, but the diversity of their mentality, their creativity, and their life choices as well. That is true freedom, and it’s difficult to find anything close, anywhere else in the world. One of the most impressive aspects of your city as we wander your streets and trains which you work so hard to keep clean, is the echoing laughter of your young people. Their conversations, though not understood by most of us are sprinkled with laughter in an animated way that is not threatening or aggressive in any way, but instead is engaging, because it reflects a new generation of people who seem to be content with their world. The few rare moments of rudeness that we could ever experience in your streets, come from either rowdy tourists, or cold and greedy immigrants. Thankfully, they are a minority and don’t often taint your image. Instead, we are treated to the fast-paced, well-mannered lifestyle of your offspring. With their genuine warmness they welcome those of us who come from all over the world, to sample the fruits of personal freedom. Nurture each sprout, and don’t stifle its growth, or otherwise we may lose a diamond in humanity’s necklace. And to even diminish your luster would be a loss we cannot bear. William S. James, Freedom's Lab Rat
